Studying at a University in Turkey for Foreigners
Step by step
1. Program and University Selection
Determine the Field of Study: First, determine the field in which you want to study (e.g. engineering, medicine, business, law, etc.). It is important to choose a department that suits your interests and career goals.
University Research: There are many private universities in Turkey. Make your choice by researching the programs offered by the universities, quality of education, language options, international recognition, faculty members and campus facilities.
2. Entrance Exams and Application
Entrance Exams: International students can usually apply through internationally recognized exams (such as SAT, ACT) or exams organized by universities. In addition, some universities may request English proficiency exam results such as TOEFL or IELTS.
University Application: Fill out the international student application form on the website of the university you have chosen. This form includes your personal information, educational background, and information about the program you want to apply to.
3. Required Documents
- Passport: A valid passport.
- High School Diploma: Original copy of high school diploma and notarized translation. This document is required for equivalence procedures in Turkey.
- Transcript: Transcript showing the grades of the courses you took during high school and its notarized translation.
- Language Proficiency Certificate: Exam results such as TOEFL, IELTS for English programs. TÖMER certificate (Turkish language proficiency certificate) may be required for Turkish programs.
- Entrance Exam Results: If the university you are applying to requests exam results such as SAT, ACT, you must also submit these documents.
- Reference Letters and Motivation Letter: Some universities may request reference letters and a personal motivation letter.
- Financial Documents: Bank statements or sponsorship letter showing that you can cover your education and living expenses.
4. Acceptance and Visa Process
- Acceptance Letter: When your application is accepted, you will receive an official acceptance letter from the university. This letter is required for the student visa application.
- Student Visa Application: You need to apply for a student visa to study in Turkey. This application is made through Turkish consulates or embassies abroad. The required documents are as follows:
- A valid passport
- Acceptance letter
- Visa application form
- Biometric photo
- Health insurance
- Documents showing financial status
- Visa Process: The visa application is usually concluded within a few weeks. You can enter Turkey after receiving your visa.
5. Registration Procedures and Residence Permit
- University Registration: After arriving in Turkey, you must complete your registration procedures on the dates determined by the university. The university’s student affairs office will assist you in this process.
- Residence Permit Application: After entering Turkey, you must apply for a residence permit to the General Directorate of Immigration Management (GİGM) within 30 days. A residence permit allows you to stay in Turkey legally and is valid for the duration of your education.
6. Living and Studying in Turkey
- Accommodation: Accommodation options include dormitories, rental apartments, and other accommodations offered by the university. You can get support from the university’s student affairs office regarding accommodation.
- Work Permit: Undergraduate and graduate students can have a part-time work permit under certain conditions. This permit is usually limited to 20 hours per week and an additional application may be required to obtain a work permit.
- Scholarship Opportunities: Some private universities in Turkey may offer scholarships based on academic success or financial situation. You can visit the university’s website or the student affairs office to get information about scholarship applications and conditions.
