University Type: Private
Location: Kyrenia, Northern Cyprus
History of the University of Kyrenia
The University of Kyrenia trains critical and innovative scholars who focus on research, create knowledge, and appreciate ethical values and social responsibility. Its roots go back to 1978 when Near East University, its sister institution, established the first Maritime Studies Faculty in Cyprus. With over thirty-five years of experience, the University has become a leader in maritime education.
Establishment in the Heart of Northern Cyprus
In 2013, the University of Kyrenia began its journey in Kyrenia, a city known for its beauty and historical significance. After securing the necessary approvals from the TRNC’s Ministry of National Education and the Higher Education Planning, Evaluation Accreditation, and Coordination Council (YODAK), the University quickly expanded its offerings.
Building on Strong Foundations
The University of Kyrenia took control of the Faculties of Maritime Studies, Maritime Management and Administration, and Marine Sciences from Near East University. It also assumed responsibility for the Marine Transportation and Management postgraduate program and the Maritime Vocational School programs. This solid foundation allowed the University to offer education grounded in deep-rooted experience.
Accreditation and Program Expansion
After receiving accreditation from YODAK, the University sought and gained approval from Turkey’s Council of Higher Education (YOK) in January 2014. Initially, classes were held at Near East University’s facilities. However, the construction of a new 2.7-hectare seaside campus in Karakum, Kyrenia, began within a year. By November 2015, the new campus was ready, and classes started on the TRNC’s Republic Day.
Maritime Programs: The University’s Core
The University’s Maritime programs follow the regulations and standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and Turkey’s Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs, and Communication. Turkish authorities regularly inspect these programs to ensure compliance.
Faculty of Aviation and Space Sciences
Recognizing market demand, the University established the Faculty of Aviation and Space Sciences. It offers degrees in Civil Air Logistics, Aviation Management, and Professional Pilot Training. The faculty began accepting students in the 2015-2016 academic year. The University of Kyrenia Flight Training Organization (FTO) provides a Professional Pilotage Program, certified by the Turkish Civil Aviation Authority, ensuring top-tier aviation education.
Expanding Educational Offerings
In 2015, the University expanded by adding faculties such as Education, Law, Economics and Administrative Sciences, Architecture, Engineering, Health Sciences, and Medicine. By the 2018-2019 academic year, the University offered 14 faculties, 1 academy, 2 vocational schools, 4 postgraduate programs, and 45 study programs.
Advancing Medical Education with State-of-the-Art Facilities
The University constructed the Dr. Suat Günsel University of Kyrenia Hospital, which opened in November 2016. The hospital, featuring 20 polyclinics, ranks as the region’s best-equipped medical facility. The University also invested in new lecture halls, a library, student residences, and additional buildings for various faculties, ensuring that students have access to world-class resources.
